From now on that will be the Au Revoir Taipei blog.

(The title of our film in Chinese is 一頁台北, which literally translates to "One Page Taipei". So for a while, the working title of our film was "First Page Taipei". Only after production did we decide to change it to "Au Revoir Taipei").

Mei-Ching won Best Production Design for the film A Place of One's Own (一席之地):

Manhattan in Taipei

The Spot Theatre in Taipei is having a mini-film festival/retrospective this month of Ingmar Bergman films. I took some friends to see "Wild Strawberries" last week (my favorite Bergman film), but unfortunately, they pretty much slept through the entire film.

The next day, however, I brought the same friends to see "Manhattan" (interestingly enough, they programmed two Woody Allen films as part of this Bergman thing, the other being his Bergman homage "Interiors"). Actually, despite being one of my favorite films, I had never seen "Manhattan" on film before. The print was pretty old and fucked up, but just seeing the film projected...it was beyond awesome...the Gershwin score, Gordon Willis' gorgeous black and white anamorphic compositions, the timelessness of New York, that classic bittersweet ending...and seeing that last close up of Muriel Hemingway on the bigscreen...it was heartbreaking.

My friends all loved "Manhattan" of course. I'm glad, cause I plan on ripping off "Manhattan" as much as possible in this film...

Really good news - "First Page Taipei" has been officially selected as 1 of 15 projects for the L'Atelier Program at this years Cannes Film Festival.

Cannes launched L’Atelier in 2005 in order to assist directors with the financing and completion of their projects - we've been invited to attend the festival in May and meet with producers, distributors and financiers, as well as to promote the project there.

Chinese Script

We just finished translating "First Page Taipei" into Chinese - it took almost a month, and is practically a different draft of the script (since so much of the dialogue had to be rewritten to work in Mandarin and Taiwanese). It's finally done now, and I think it reads much better than the English version. A sample:

Some excellent news - renowned international filmmaker Wim Wenders ("Paris, Texas", "Wings of Desire", "The American Friend", "The Million Dollar Hotel"...just to name a few) is officially on board as our executive producer for "First Page Taipei". It's an amazing honor to have him help guide the project - and should give us another big push as we continue with financing and preproduction.

I've spent the last month or so shooting a "making of" on another local feature called "Parking"("停車") starring Taiwanese stars Chang Chen and Kuai Lun Mei. It's been interesting working again on a Taiwanese set, but I was reminded again that the filmmaking process here is really not all that different from back in the US.

I've also been directing a commercial and (slowly) translating/rewriting the "First Page Taipei" script into Chinese with the help of my friend Eli.

Pusan

Just got back from Korea and Hong Kong -

I actually had to go early to avoid a typhoon hitting Taipei, but it worked out well and I got to spend an extra day or two in Seoul with Michelle (our producer) and her friends and family before taking the train to Pusan.

The festival was really cool...Pusan really is like an Asian Cannes - situated right on a beautiful strip of beach (though I didn't get to see many films, not even our own "Mei" screenings since we were busy with the PPP).

We had a lot of good meetings with potential financiers and sales companies - learned a lot through the experience, and also met a lot of new friends, including some of our partners at greenskyfilms. We also attended the Taiwan Reception at Pusan, which was a lot of fun.

"First Page Taipei" was just recently selected to the Pusan Promotion Plan (PPP) at the Pusan International Film Festival's Asian Film Market in October. It's basically an exclusive market which helps young filmmakers/producers find financing for their projects.
